AMD has quietly introduced the Radeon RX 7800M GPU for mobile platforms, rounding out its Radeon RX 7000 series lineup for gaming laptops. While the official announcement of the RX 7800M’s availability is still pending, the GPU is expected to begin appearing in gaming laptops this month.
The RX 7000 series, based on AMD’s RDNA3 architecture, first launched in late 2022, with the high-end RX 7900 XT and XTX models leading the charge. Over the following years, AMD expanded the series with more budget-friendly options like the RX 7600 XT and mid-tier offerings like the RX 7900 GRE. However, a mobile version of the RX 7800 XT has been notably absent—until now.
Spotted by Videocardz.com, AMD’s new RX 7800M GPU will feature similar core specs to its desktop counterpart, the RX 7800 XT, but with some key differences tailored for laptops:
- 60 compute units, the same as the desktop version, equivalent to 3,840 stream processors.
- The 192-bit memory bus is smaller than the 256-bit desktop RX 7800 XT bus.
- 432 GB/s memory bandwidth, down from the RX 7800 XT’s 624 GB/s.
- 48 MB Infinity Cache, compared to 64 MB on the desktop version.
- 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, less than the 16 GB found on the RX 7800 XT.
- 2145 MHz game clock and a 180W TGP, 20W less than the RX 7800 XT’s 200W TGP.
Given its specs, the RX 7800M is likely to deliver performance comparable to the desktop RX 7700 XT. When benchmarked against Nvidia’s mobile offerings, early leaks suggest that it will outperform the RTX 4070, while falling short of the RTX 4080 in terms of raw power.
No laptops featuring the RX 7800M have been officially revealed yet, but announcements are expected soon. Meanwhile, gamers eager for AMD’s latest tech can explore a variety of gaming laptops already on sale, many of which feature AMD and Nvidia’s latest GPUs at competitive prices.
