Overview

Multiplayer survival game about parenting and civilization building. You can be a mother to another player. You can live your entire life in just one hour. You can have children with other players. As you rebuild civilization from scratch, leave a legacy.

Jason Rohrer is my name and I have been working with One Hour One Life for over three years. Everything was done by me. I drew the graphics on paper using pens and markers. I also coded the engine. I wrote all the music and composed it. It’s very personal and unlike any other game out there. It’s also huge, with over 1300 interactive and craftable objects. It’s growing every week with new features added weekly. In February 2018, the game was released on my website. I have since released 29 updates via Steam over the following months. I have promised to continue releasing weekly updates for the next two years with the ultimate goal of creating the most complete crafting game ever made.

Ok, but what about the actual game?

First, your life span is only an hour. Each minute represents a year. As a newborn baby you join the game server. Your mother is a randomly selected player. Your survival is dependent on her. Why would she waste her precious time and resources just to keep you alive, when she can save her own life? Because she will die just like everyone else. If she wants her life to be meaningful, the next generation (aka you) is her only hope. If you live to adulthood, you might be able to have children with other players–and they will give meaning to your life achievements.

Players are working together to rebuild civilization, as part of a growing family tree. The online game world starts out as a near-infinite expanse of wilderness (four billion meters wide from east to west, and four billion meters wide from north to south, with a total surface area of over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 square meters, or 36,000 times bigger than Earth). Eve is the first person to join the server. She starts in the wilderness as the root for the family tree. Eve and her immediate descendants are the ones who laid the foundation for future civilization. They may have made a few basic tools and cooked basic food, as well as started a small farm to survive. The foundation of this primitive technology will be built upon by future generations, who will eventually learn more advanced technology such as metal working, permanent buildings, and domesticated animals.

How to download and install The Game
