Palworld, the Pokémon-like survival game that took the PC gaming world by storm earlier this year, has now made its way to PlayStation 5. The announcement was made during Sony’s State of Play livestream, marking a significant step for the game as it continues to expand its reach across platforms.

Already available on Xbox, developer Pocketpair has hinted at crossplay features in development, which could further unify the player base across consoles. The PS5 release is exciting for console players eager to jump into one of 2024’s standout titles. However, this launch comes at a tricky time for the indie studio.

After months of speculation about whether Palworld’s similarities to Pokémon would catch the attention of Nintendo, it finally happened. Earlier this month, Nintendo announced that it is suing Pocketpair for patent infringement, targeting features that resemble key mechanics from the Pokémon franchise.

Our investigation suggests that one of the patents at issue may involve the use of Poké Ball-like mechanics. Nintendo’s legal team, known for their high-profile wins, is well-versed in defending their intellectual property, making this a tough battle for the indie studio.

Despite the lawsuit, Pocketpair remains committed to its community, stating: “It is truly unfortunate that we will be forced to allocate significant time to matters unrelated to game development due to this lawsuit. However, we will do our utmost for our fans, and to ensure that indie game developers are not hindered or discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas.”

As Palworld continues to grow, all eyes are on Pocketpair and how this legal challenge will affect the game’s future.
