Rumor: PlayStation Could Be Reviving Classic IPs
A reputable insider has claimed that PlayStation is working on bringing back several of its dormant first-party franchises. This comes shortly after PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst hinted at the company’s interest in revisiting older IPs.
PlayStation has a vast library of classic games, many of which haven’t seen new entries in years. Fans have increasingly called for the return of beloved franchises, and the success of Astro Bot—which featured cameos of many PlayStation characters—highlighted the demand for nostalgia-driven content. Additionally, the launch of PlayStation’s Classics Catalog for PS Plus Premium subscribers has fueled interest in old IPs.
According to industry insider Andy Robinson, PlayStation is actively exploring the revival of “deep cut, old IPs.” While he didn’t provide specifics, these projects are expected to be modest in scope, possibly involving lesser-known franchises like The Getaway, Starhawk, Tokyo Jungle, The Legend of Dragoon, and others.
It’s unclear whether these revivals will be remasters, reboots, or entirely new games, and whether they will be developed by PlayStation’s internal studios or outsourced to external teams. Fans will have to wait for official announcements to confirm which classic titles will make their return.
