Super Mario Bros. Movie had the highest opening ever for an animated film!
Super Mario Bros. Movie has done it again – Illumination’s rendition of Nintendo’s beloved franchise had the best ever worldwide opening for an animated film, and that can’t be bad!
Although some early critic reviews for The Super Mario Bros. Movie weren’t exactly glowing, fans’ responses have been overwhelmingly positive. As of writing, it boasts a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes – an impressive feat in itself!
According to IGN, The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned an estimated $368 million worldwide during its opening weekend – surpassing Frozen II’s record of $358 million and becoming the biggest global film opening of 2019, easily crushing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $225.3 million into nothingness.
Still, The Super Mario Bros. Movie still has a ways to go before it can claim the title of highest grossing video game adaptation – currently held by Warcraft with $439 million at the worldwide box office (according to Box Office Mojo). But at its current pace, it seems likely that The Super Mario Bros. Movie will eventually surpass this mark too.
At GAMINGbible, we were big fans of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This is more than a movie that draws inspiration from the main Mario series; it oozes with passion for both franchise and gaming as a whole, making for an incredibly enjoyable time.”
