Overview

Davey Wreden, an American developer, created The Stanley Parable. It is an interactive storytelling video game and a walking simulator. The player is shown the game from the first-person view. Although the player has limited movement and interaction with some elements of the game’s environment (e.g. opening doors or pressing buttons), there are no other controls. The voiceover of the game’s narration tells the story. Stanley, the protagonist, works in an office and is responsible for analyzing data on a computer screen. He also presses buttons without hesitation. The screen suddenly goes blank one day. Stanley, not knowing what to do next, explores the building, but finds no people there. The story is now split into many possible endings, depending on the choices made by the player. The story is continued by the narrator. However, if Stanley comes across an area that offers a choice, the narration will tell him which path to take. You can choose to oppose the narrator and take the opposite action. This will force the narration to adjust to the new direction. It may allow the player to return to the original path or create a new narration. The player may make the first decision in the game at one of two doors. The narrator will state that Stanley chose the left. The player has the option to either follow the narration to keep the story on track or choose to choose the right door. This causes the narrator to adjust his story to get him back to the “proper” path. The story is thought-provoking because it explores the nature of choices and how they are made. In handling the player’s choices, the narration breaks down the fourth wall several times.
