Capcom says there is little hope for a Darkstalkers Revival.
Capcom has been promoting the idea of a Darkstalkers revival for years. They last lit that spark with Darkstalkers Resurrection in 2013. Producer YoshinoriOno explained to fans that they would need more Darkstalkers if they bought the Revival collection in large numbers.
“We won’t be releasing any new instalments in the Darkstalkers Series anytime soon,” Ono explained to Famitsu that we failed to meet our sales targets for Darkstalkers Resurrection. “In the end, there are some brick walls that a salaryman cannot overcome. If a game sells less than 2 million copies, we would have to stop any plans for a sequel.
Although Ono has left the company, there is still hope. Fans believe there is hope for a new version if they support a release. That brings us to the upcoming Capcom Fighting Collection, which brings together Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge, Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire, Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers’ Revenge, Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire, Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, Cyberbots, and Red Earth in a single preservation-friendly package. Fans still hope that the collection will bring back some of their favourite series. However, most Darkstalkers are the majority.
“I want these titles to be re-played on current-gen consoles. People who have seen these titles but have never had the opportunity to do so should also be given this chance. When asked by Game Informer about any potential revival, Shuhei Matsumoto, Capcom producer, said that they do not believe this will increase the likelihood of these series being resurrected.”
Matsumoto instead stressed that the collection was primarily about Capcom’s history and introducing new players to these classic titles. Matsumoto also mentioned the Street Fighter V costumes, inspired by many characters from these titles.
“I believe that classic materials should be preserved. He said that this is not just true for games, but all industries and cultures.” My goal is to revive the community through doing this. I want people to have the opportunity to play Capcom’s previous titles. I want people to jump in after Street Fighter V and be able to say, “I didn’t know this costume was from that character!” and fall in love again with the world, characters, and stories of these original titles. This is why I consider it my job to provide these opportunities for our players.
Capcom Fighting Collection will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch on June 24, on PC, on June 24, and on June 24, respectively. It’s a must-have for all Capcom classics. But don’t expect to be able to play Darkstalkers: Vampire Hunter Salvator anytime soon.
