Distant Worlds received generally positive reviews upon its launch. RTS guru scored it a score of 8/10, praises the replayability as well as its large galaxy sizes, but directed some of the criticisms towards the player interface and the graphics.

They did express some reservations about the game’s tutorial in a post that said “While the game does help the new player with its efficient UI and two tutorials, the player still feels like the game stuffs him in a spacesuit, gives him a pat on the back and kicks him out the airlock to fend for himself.” Metacritic tallied the weighted average of 81/100 in the case of Distant Worlds: Universe.
Space Sector initially had mixed views of the game rating the game 5.0 out of 10. Though they were elated by the sheer size of this game, they found that the interface’s high learning curve, poor graphics, and bad designs had resulted in Distant Worlds being “a dry, sterile, overwhelming, boring and ultimately not fun game to play.”
The critic, Adam Solo, later changed his review to an 8.8 out of 10 saying that the game was vastly enhanced after a number of patch updates and the game’s first expansion launched.
