Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance returned Raiden to the spotlight of Metal Gear universe once more in spectacular style, so fans have been anticipating its sequel for some time now. A decade since we last wielded our HF Blade is upon us; and you might think February 19 would have been an appropriate opportunity for its announcement or at least some artwork related to Metal Gear Rising 2; unfortunately though nothing materialized.

That doesn’t rule out Metal Gear Rising 2 though; PlatinumGames recently revealed during its 10th Anniversary that player numbers for Rising had grown considerably since release; its director Kenji Saito even reached out to fans via letter to express delight and surprise that Rising is still popular – could that eventually lead to Metal Gear Rising 2 being made available to everyone? Probably not yet but fan opinion can certainly have its say as recently witnessed with Assassin’s Creed Mirage moving back from an RPG format back towards classic AC style playability!
Even with Metal Gear Rising’s popularity, no talk or evidence exists regarding an official sequel for Revengeance 2, nor Metal Gear Rising 2. However, one should keep an open mind as to a sequel being developed on PC or current generation consoles; we still have several AAA releases planned before these consoles reach end of life (PS5/XBone Series X/S etc).

Metal Gear Rising 2 may still make its debut by the end of this generation; but that would require PlatinumGames or another developer to start work secretly now on it; should Metal Gear Rising 2 launch now, we could expect it to hit shelves within 2026-2027 at best.
Quinton Flynn, Raiden’s voice actor, posted an ominous tweet which hinted that there could be plans for a sequel.

Flynn responded to fan tweets calling for Metal Gear Rising 2 with “stay tuned for announcements in the upcoming weeks”. Unfortunately, that announcement ended up only being about celebrating 10th Anniversary celebration – where no new information was unveiled.

Could Raiden return full circle into Snake’s corner in Metal Gear Solid 2: Revengeance 2? While that would likely include his mention (with possibly even his funeral being referenced), we must all acknowledge that Solid Snake and Otacon have likely seen their last days until an MGS remake comes along and announced.

However, writer Etsu Tamari did a fantastic job weaving an intricate tale in the Metal Gear universe for Rising, so someone is sure to come up with another fascinating plot for its sequel. With so much room within this expansive world for Raiden to face off against another collection of nanomachine or robotic foes (like Senator Steven Armstrong in EXCELSUS), anything may happen with enough creative inspiration; so long as we get more Blade Wolf!
Kojima seems more focused than ever on Death Stranding and Xbox Game Studios projects these days, leaving Metal Gear Rising 2 without him as its director. PlatinumGames could still take charge, although their attention may still be diverted towards Project G.G – though none-the-less their dev team recently revealed it is an all-original project and not Revengeance 2. PlatinumGames seems ideal to handle fast paced action for this sequel as opposed to Revengeance 2, though.

No one knows for certain whether we will ever see another Metal Gear game; anyone’s future plans of this series remain unknown. Remember, though: Metal Gear recently made headlines when its main protagonist was replaced with someone far less popular who might just become its future face if Konami plays their cards right.
