Outlast, the video game, is survival horror-psychological. It was developed by Red Barrels, a company that had previously worked on popular games like Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Uncharted.
The game was first released for Microsoft Windows on September 4, 2013, and then for PlayStation 4 only in February 2014. It is available for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers and for a small fee for everyone else.
Outlast: Whistleblower, the prequel of the original Outlast game was released on May 6, 2014, for Microsoft Windows.
Xbox One will be releasing the Xbox One version of the game on June 19, 2014.
In the modern day, the story takes place in a mental hospital located in remote mountains of America. The protagonist, Miles Upshur is a freelance journalist who receives a tip from a mysterious source about Mount Massive asylum, which is run by Murkoff Corporation.
He decides to find out what is happening there and uncover the truth. Miles discovers the atmosphere in the hospital isn’t the best. There are dead bodies, blood all over the place, and no sign of life. The road is filled with patients who are clearly scared or freaked by the invisible presence they call Walrider.
Miles was walking around the asylum when he encountered a SWAT agent dying who told him to leave. You cannot fight this invisible presence. This means that some documents are the key to “Project Walrider”.
