PlayStation is offering over PS100 worth of downloads free for PS4 owners.
PlayStation has recently offered subscribers free downloads worth over PS100, providing evidence that lower tier subscribers may be receiving better value for their money.
From its launch for PlayStation 3 back in 2010 until today, PlayStation Plus has often represented good value. Granted, when first offered for PS3, PS Plus offered additional “free” games at an annual subscription cost because online gaming was free at that point in time. However, as time progressed and additional titles became available over time.
However, as we moved forward into the PS4 generation, PS Plus quickly became mandatory to enjoy online gaming as well as receive additional ‘free’ titles.
Value of any product or service can depend upon individual perception; for instance, Sony’s recently revamped PS Plus subscription service with three tiers: Essential, Extra and Premium might seem great value to some or rip-off to others.
PS Essential, originally launched during the PlayStation4 era, provides online gaming as well as access to a select few ‘free’ additional titles. Extra tier offers more PS4 and PS5 game selection while Premium adds classic pre-PS4 era games to Essential’s selections.
As an aside, no matter which tier you subscribe to, any PS1 and PSP games purchased on PS3 or Vita at any point will become free downloads via the Premium tier in case they become available again in future updates of the PlayStation Store.
Back on topic now – Reddit users have been discussing the various PlayStation Plus subscription tiers on Reddit, with Essential and Extra providing the greatest value.

For April 2023, PS Plus Essential offered $58.52 (PS47). Meanwhile, Extra offered an incredible value at over $127.09 and Premium was only $15.96 (PS13).
“Extra is always worth my while,” commented thread poster tk3090, while another thread poster named Kabirsingh84 extolled its virtues: “Extra offers such an incredible selection of games ranging from FPSs and adventure titles through fishing deck building survival horror and racing titles – truly impressive lineup!”
However, subscribers should remember that while PS13 may seem like a small sum in terms of value (it certainly is), Premium includes everything Essential and Extra have to offer as well as classic games not currently present on that tier. Still, many are dismayed at how unattractive Premium looks due to this factor alone.
Additionally, PlayStation 1 and PSP games available through Premium can only be streamed; therefore if your Internet connectivity is poorer, Premium would seem even less worthwhile at this stage. Personally speaking, I think Extra provides enough entertainment value until Premium brings more in return; so until that point arrives for me and many others alike.
Recent PlayStation Plus subscribers have noted that April 2023’s offerings contain a game they should consider prioritizing over others.
