Stardew Valley has sold over 20 million copies
Stardew Valley is still our favorite sim. Six years since its debut, the beloved farming sim has reached a new milestone in sales with more than 20 million copies sold. There’s no indication that this popularity is waning.
Eric Barone, the creator of PC Gamer confirmed that his beloved indie game had sold millions on all platforms. He said that Stardew valley has sold 13,000,000 copies on PC. However, it has also been released on Switch and Android.
Perhaps its popularity isn’t too surprising considering its roots in beloved classic, Harvest Moon, but how fast the game is moving years later remains impressive–especially as something, not a service game. Barone stated that Stardew Valley is still selling well on digital shelves in the same PC Gamer interview. The average daily sales are “higher today” than ever before.
Barone could not pinpoint a single reason for this success but speculated that we all are telling our friends about it, and pushing those numbers higher. Anecdotally I have played Stardew Valley every day since its debut. However, the multiplayer update in 2018 made it a much more popular game. It’s Steam concurrent players, as recorded via SteamDB, are in line with other multiplayer reveals and launches for new updates. Stardew’s concurrent players on Steam have risen in 2020 as we all entered pandemic lockdown hell.
I was one of those people who returned to farming during this time. I now own Stardew Valley on pretty much every console except one. It reached its highest Steam concurrents during the Christmas Eve holiday in 2020. This was right around one of its largest updates. The game still hovers around 37,000 online.
Barone’s farming simulator seemed to bring new life to the genre when my favorite games seemed to be in a slump. It was the first farming game to offer queer romance at launch.
The Stardew Valley creator has yet to release Haunted Chocolatier. Barone stated on his blog that “it will take a while” until the game is available. I am fine with waiting and I don’t mind bringing any crap that I find along the road to Maru and Abigail. Sebastian is my favorite because he reminds me of Sasuke in Naruto. I haven’t even dabbled in the mod scene. There are Emet-Selch romances in Stardew Valley.
