The previous Super Monkey Ball games had players with a limited number of lives. This added to the level of pressure. The live system maintained the arcade-style feel of the games. According to a tweet by the Super Monkey BallTwitter, the live system has been removed. This seems to have caused some fan outrage.
Recently, @SuperMonkeyBall tweeted that it would be eliminating the lives system in Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania to try and make things easier overall. It is hoped that newcomers will find the game more appealing. Super Monkey Ball games are great party titles, but they can also be very challenging.
The tweet stated that players will still be allowed to collect bananas. These were once important for giving players more lives. However, they will now provide “a feeling of accomplishment” as well as “digital potassium”. Although the tweet mentioned that bananas could be used to unlock things in the future (as per the follow-up information), it was unclear what this means. Last week, SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio shared information about a Dark Banana mode within Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania. This will be unlockable through unknown methods, such as by collecting standard bananas.
Some fans are unhappy about how lives will be handled in the Super Monkey Ball games. Many fans enjoyed the tension of running out of lives at difficult levels. This was part of what made the franchise so enjoyable. It is exciting to see Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania become the Smash Ultimate of this series. However, fans will be disappointed to see some aspects of the game depart from the original formula. We hope that the final product will feel like Super Monkey Ball to fans while welcoming new players.
