Bungie Will Never Add This Type of Mission to Destiny 2
One of Destiny 2’s biggest narrative issues is its insistence on making the player’s Guardian central to everything that occurs in the game. While this works fine for a single-player title, in an MMO it can get confusing and awkward. So what if, when a future season of Destiny 2 launched, we got a side mission? Instead of playing as our Guardians with all their loot and powers, we could play as an ordinary member of one of Destiny’s alien factions?
There’s precedent for this in other live service games such as Warframe. These missions offer players a distinct experience from the core gameplay, restricting player loadouts and abilities while offering new insights on the world within the game. While Destiny 2 may not support such missions, we can always dream, can’t we?
Imagine a Destiny 2 mission where a team of Eliksni are prowling through an abandoned ship in space, being stalked by the mysterious Guardian who will not die no matter how many times they kill it. You could set traps to explode and slow down the Guardian so that you can accomplish your objectives faster… That sounds like an awesome asymmetrical multiplayer spinoff all by itself…
What about a Halo: Reach-inspired experience where a squad of Cabal soldiers desperately attempts to defend an area while more and more Guardians arrive? The Cabals would be ideal for this kind of thing, fighting bravely until their last soldier faces certain death.
Destiny 2 could even have you playing as a Hive warrior, starting as an insignificant Thrall and gaining power as you defeat foes until facing off against a Guardian in single combat. The possibilities are endless!
