Twitter user Cydjarin noticed the detail in the game’s intro. Using the game’s photo mode, a player zoomed in to Joel’s bedside. This revealed a variety of medications. Joel may have been taking anti-anxiety drugs and tablets for his gastric ulcer and blood pressure.
Warning! Major prologue spoilers ahead. Anyone who has played The Last of Us, Part 1 or I will know how tragic this prologue is. Joel’s young daughter Sarah dies in his arms after the Cordyceps outbreak. Joel would have lost his anti-anxiety medication at a crucial time. He grieved for Sarah and dealt with the intense emotions of the epidemic.
The discovery was shared on Reddit.
